Dental Office Training – Why the Best Train Consistently

When you hear the word “training” do you envision a super fit person wearing spandex and running around sweating in the gym?  Are you hearing the “Rocky” theme music in the background?  Perhaps.  But when it comes to the dental office, maybe the term training sounds foreign to you.

We polled over 40,000 dentists across the US and Canada and we found some shocking statistics.  Did you know that 97% of dentists and their teams don’t train consistently, or don’t train at all?!  Wow!!  That means in a year, the majority of dental offices may train once at the most.  And that’s so counter to what we hear these dentists complaining about, which is lack of enthusiasm from their teams, inconsistency in their staff, lack of business growth, and poorly executed office systems.

Even dental offices where team members have been there for a long time might not train or maybe have never trained.  They assume that because they have been working in the industry for so long, they know everything there is to know.  A good employee (or person for that matter) has never stopped learning.  There is always room for improvement.  Plus, many team members probably have never gone through formal dental training with a specific systematic approach.

Imagine for a moment you were looking to get in shape (and who isn’t, right!?).  Now, visualize a person who thought they could get in shape but didn’t work out, or only worked out once a year.  It’s not going to happen.  In order to get in shape you have to train a few times a week and keep up the momentum to see improvements over time.  It’s the same thing with training your dental team.  Small improvements over time will amount to large shifts in your practices success and bottom line results.  This is what is going to set your office far ahead of the competition.

There is a great quote by the late Coach John Wooden that says, “If you don’t have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over?”  That message seems to echo so clearly what so many dental offices get stuck doing year after year.  They know the problem but then they don’t take the steps to correct it.

That’s where our training program comes in handy.  We break the training into short actionable weekly plans for the dentist and their team members and make it easy to work into your routine.   It’s not about cramming as much knowledge and information into one sitting as you can.  This is the recipe for disaster as much of what people learn in long drawn out lectures, will either be forgotten or not implemented effectively into practice.  It’s about making sure the lessons are learned in a logical sequence that makes sense, making sure it’s being implemented, and then making sure it’s being mastered.

And dental office training doesn’t just stop when the material is mastered.  That’s the beauty of online learning.  Training is meant to be ongoing and always fine-tuned.  Once a subject is learned, a student will be able to go on to more advanced learning modules that are being added and updated.  New team members will be able to train in a set in-place system right from the get-go, without having to stop everything in your office to get them up to speed.

If you get into top shape with six pack abs and then decided you were as fit as you wanted to be, would you be able to just stop working out and maintain the same physique?  Definitely not.  It’s the same with training in your dental office.  You have to continue training to maintain what you have built up over time.

Here are the key points to remember when it comes to dental office training and your team:

  1. Keep the training constant and consistent
  2. Everyone should be training (dentists, office managers, hygienist, assistants, and administrators)
  3. Make the time (even if it’s only 15 minutes a week)
  4. Have systems in place
  5. Give it all you’ve got
  6. No excuses
  7. Have fun

Now that we have given you some pointers on your dental office training, you have three options.  First, you can continue to do nothing and get the same results that you have been getting.  Second, you can try to implement the training on your own and figure out the systems to do it the hard way.  Or, third, you can join us at All-Star Dental Academy.  We have been told our program features the most comprehensive online training program in dentistry.  This will get you on the fast track to success.  See you soon!
